I've got quite a few spare parts lying around, so ...

I've got quite a few spare parts lying around, so I've decided to throw together a PVR box, since I like my uncle's Tivo but don't have the cash to buy one myself.

Here's what I've got right now:
-AMD Athlon 1GHz processor
-512MB PC133 168-pin RAM
-Soyo K7VTA Pro motherboard
-Sound Blaster 128 sound card (I can also use the onboard sound)
-Kyro II 64MB video card
-4GB Maxtor HD
-Digital tulip 10/100 ethernet card

My questions are:

-Can anyone recommend a decent budget video capture device to use? Or any other hardware that might help?
-What build optimizations should I use to help speed?
-I plan on saving all the video to my 120GB file server via NFS. How can I optimize this to provide better performance?
-The Soyo board I have supports IrDA, but I lost whatever adapter the board came with. Where can I get a replacement?
-Which brand of universal remotes would you recommend?
-Will I need any additional hardware besides what I've already listed?
